French seams on curves - am I doing something wrong?

trying to do french seams on a princess seam bodice and its so bulky at the curves. ive trimmed, clipped, pressed, everything. still looks lumpy from the outside. should i just give up and do regular seams with a zigzag? or is there a trick im missing
