Best way to hem stretchy knits without a coverstitch?

I'm trying to finish a jersey dress and my twin needle keeps skipping. I've tried ballpoint, stretch needles, walking foot, nothing works. The fabric is pretty thin modal jersey. do i just need to give in and buy a coverstitch machine or is there a trick im missing?
