Does anyone hand sew the lining hem on jackets or do you machine sew it?

Ive been machine sewing lining hems and then doing a catch stitch on top to secure it and the results are okay but not great. I keep reading that the proper method is entirely by hand but that sounds slow. What do you actually do and does it show a difference?
