Is basting spray worth it or does it gum up your needle?

Ive been pinning everything but I keep reading about basting spray as an alternative for quilting and applique. Im interested in using it for garment work too, mainly to hold seam allowances in place when pressing. Does it actually work or does it make a mess of the needle and the iron?
