How do you calculate how much fabric to buy when the pattern is in a different width?

Most of my patterns list yardage for 60 inch fabric but a lot of the fabric I find is 45 or 54 inches. I know theres a formula but I always second-guess myself. Is there a reliable way to convert or do you just buy extra to be safe?
