How critical is the difference between underlining, interlining, and interfacing?

I keep mixing these up and I think its affecting my results. My understanding: interfacing is fused or sewn to just the facing/waistband, underlining is a layer cut the same as the fashion fabric, interlining is for warmth. Is that right? And when would you choose underlining over just using a heavier fabric?
