How do you sew buttonholes that dont look handmade? Even on a good machine theyre inconsistent.

I have a relatively new Brother machine with an automatic buttonhole foot and they still come out slightly uneven. Sometimes one side is thicker than the other, sometimes the ends dont match. I follow the same steps every time. What am I doing wrong?
