Adding pockets to a pattern that doesnt have them, whats your method?

Im tired of making beautiful things with no pockets. I want to add side seam pockets to a skirt pattern that doesnt include them. Ive done it once before by tracing a pocket from another pattern and it worked but felt very improvised. Is there a proper method?
