Pad stitching a lapel by hand, is it necessary or is fusible enough?

Im making a blazer and I want to do it properly but Im also realistic about my time. The internet is split between people who say hand pad stitching is essential for a good roll and people who say a good fusible interfacing does the same job. Has anyone compared the two directly?
