Ive been sewing 10 years and just learned what a stay stitch actually does.

I knew I was supposed to do it. I did it. I had no idea why. Turns out its not decorative, its preventing the bias edges from stretching while you handle the piece before sewing. I thought it was just a transfer marking tool. Whats a technique you did for years without understanding why?
