Does anyone actually use a tailors ham for every curved seam or is it overkill?

I got a tailors ham last year and I use it for collars and lapels but I feel like I should be using it more. The tutorials I watch press literally everything over the ham. Is that really necessary for, say, a princess seam? Or is it mainly for areas where you need a 3D shape?
