Do you trace patterns or cut into the original? Ive been on both sides.

I used to always trace but then I started cutting into originals when I was confident about sizing and it saves so much time. Now Im somewhere in the middle depending on the pattern. Whats your approach and has anyone regretted cutting into an original?
