Do you prewash everything or just certain fibers? Ive been winging it for years.

I prewash cotton automatically but Ive been inconsistent about everything else. Linen, silk, wool, sometimes I do it, sometimes I dont, and I dont really have a system. Whats your actual rule? And has anyone regretted not prewashing something?
