Understitching, is there a rule for when you do it and when you skip it?

I understitch facings automatically now but Im less sure about when to do it on other seams. Collars, waistbands, cuffs? Ive seen it done on all of those but also not done and the results look similar. Is there a logic to it or is it just whatever works?
