Anyone actually self-taught in tailoring or did you take a class?

I want to learn proper tailoring techniques like pad stitching, horsehair canvas, the whole thing, but I cant find a class near me and the online options Ive found are either very basic or very expensive. Is it genuinely learnable from books and YouTube or do you need someone to physically show you?
