Do I actually need a serger for knits or can I get away with a regular machine?

I keep seeing people say you need a serger for any knit project but Ive been getting by with a zigzag stitch for years. Are there projects where a regular machine genuinely wont cut it or is the serger thing a bit overhyped? I sew mostly t-shirts and casual dresses, nothing super structured.
