Do I actually need a serger for knits?

Ive been sewing for about a year and only work with wovens because knits scare me. Everyone says you need a serger but thats another $300+ I dont want to spend right now. Can you really sew knits on a regular machine with a stretch stitch? Or is a serger actually essential?
