Can you actually machine wash silk charmeuse?

Ive heard mixed things about this. Some people say cold delicate cycle is fine, others say hand wash only. I just bought 3 yards of silk charmeuse and I want to prewash before cutting but Im terrified of ruining it. Its not cheap fabric. What do you all actually do?
